Elected a Fellow of the Society on 11 May 1864 (no.2203) and served as President between 1894-1896. Awarded the Wollaston Fund in 1866, the Lyell Fund in 1879, the Murchison Medal in 1884 and finally the highest honour of the Society, the Wollaston Medal in 1906.
Henry Woodward was born in Norwich and educated at Norwich Grammar School. By inclination a naturalist, Woodward entered the Geological Department of the British Museum in 1858, eventually becoming Keeper, 1880-1902.

His particular interest was in fossils and he was a leading authority on fossil crustacean and other arthropods. With Professor Thomas Rupert Jones he founded the
Geological Magazine and from 1865-1918 was its sole editor.
