Cephalaspis Lyelli

Cephalepis Lyelli large

This watercolour study of the head of the Early Devonian fossil fish Cephalaspis Lyelli (LDGSL/613/2/11/2) is by Louis Agassiz's first wife Cécilie Agassiz (née Braun), who was a gifted natural history artist in her own right. There are over 70 drawings by Cécilie (or Cecile as she preferred) in the collection, all undertaken between 1831-1835. After the birth of their first son Alexander in December 1835 and a further two children born in 1837 and 1841, Cecile lost interest in her husband's work.
