Publishing your funded research open access with the Geological Society
The Geological Society offers routes to open access publication that comply with the UKRI policy and those of funders implementing Plan S. and the "Office of Science and Technology Policy" (OSTP), the Nelson Memo.
All UKRI-funded authors are able to publish with the Geological Society.
You can publish your final article open access in the Geological Society’s open access journal Earth Science, Systems and Society
Earth Science, Systems and Society is a fully open access journal. If your article is accepted in this journal then your version of record will be made immediately open access with a creative commons attribution (CC BY) licence. You can pay for the article processing charge (APC) using your UKRI funding, an institutional block grant or your institution may have an institutional agreement. Find out more here: EScubed
You can publish your final article open access in all of the Geological Society’s hybrid journals and books using a transitional agreement
If the corresponding author of your article is at an institution with a transformative read and publish agreement (‘transitional agreement’) then you are able to publish in any of the Geological Society’s hybrid journals and books. If your article is accepted then your version of record will be made immediately open access with a creative commons attribution (CC BY) licence. The APC will be waived and agreements are uncapped so you do not need to worry about them running out in a given year.
Transitional agreements offer read access to the full Lyell Collection with over 300,000 pages of research.
Find out if your institution has a transformative agreement here: Read and Publish agreements
You can publish your final article open access in the Geological Society’s hybrid journals with Transformative Journal status
The Geological Society’s owned and co-owned hybrid journals have Transformative Journal status. If your article is accepted then your version of record will be made immediately open access with a creative commons attribution (CC BY) licence upon payment of an APC. You can pay for the APC using your UKRI funding, an institutional block grant or other means.
The Geological Society’s Transformative Journals are:
- Journal of the Geological Society
- Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology
- Petroleum Geoscience
- Geoenergy
- Geochemistry: Exploration, Environment, Analysis
- Proceedings of the Yorkshire Geological Society
Please contact the Editorial Office by email if you are unable to publish by any of these routes
The Geological Society is actively pursuing sustainable opportunities that meet the open access needs of our community to ensure we continue to fund the Society’s charitable activities. The routes to open access publication outlined above best ensure a full and viable transition to open access for the Society, and authors are encouraged to use these where they can. All UKRI-funded authors are able to publish with the Geological Society so please contact us by email so we can advise you.
