Professional life
Steve gained a degree in geology from Bedford College, London in 1970 and went on to obtain a Master’s in geochemistry from the University of Birmingham in 1971. In 1975, he completed his PhD at the University of Hull, before securing his first lectureship at the University of Newcastle.
Steve taught geology at Hatfield Polytechnic (which became the University of Hertfordshire) for many years, eventually becoming Head of Applied Geology in 1992. In 1996, he left academia and started working as an expert in contaminated land at Milton Keynes Council, eventually becoming Team Leader of the Environmental Protection Team until he retired in 2014.
Scenery & Escapism
He had a particular fondness for the geology of the north coast of Scotland and published several papers on the area, along with his first wife, Valerie. He owned a holiday cottage up there so that he could return every year to enjoy its beautiful scenery and peaceful escapism.
Steve leaves behind his wife, Hazel, five children, a large collection of hand specimens, and numerous photographs of rocks and scenery.
