A presentation of the disaster mitigation mission in Tajikistan which covers a series of mudflows, triggered by GLOFs, created a natural dam in the centre of Pamirs mountains; the dam impounded a 2Mm3 lake, and there was a danger that the dam could burst an affect 0.5million of people living downstream. The World Bank commissioned Matthew Free and Ljiljana Spasic-Gril to undertake a rapid risk assessment and propose immediate and long term remedial measures.
