Durham Cathedral

Durham CathedralDating from AD 1093, Durham Cathedral occupies a strategic position on a promontory high above the River Wear and is a UNESCO World Heritage Site, regarded as one of the finest examples of Norman architecture.

The building stones used expose some excellent geology, including the local ‘Frosterley Marble’, a black limestone containing fossil corals of the Carboniferous Period.

A Geology Trail of the surrounding riverbanks is available from the Cathedral bookshop.
