Ken Thomson, Lecturer in Earth sciences, died aged only 41 in April 2007. To celebrate his life and work some 30 geoscientists drawn from academia and industry gathered in the Birmingham School of Geography, Earth & Environmental Sciences on May 14 for a day of talks, posters and lively debate on the diverse range of topics in which Ken was interested.
Participants travelled from across the UK and even the Faroe Islands to discuss progress in modelling and visualisation of sedimentary basin dynamics. Notable themes included mechanisms of emplacement of igneous rocks and injected sandstones, geoarchaeology, and a talk on the massively destructive mud volcano in East Java (See feature, Geoscientist 18.5) thought to have been triggered by nearby drilling. Such was the quality of the scientific sessions that a thematic set of papers will be produced for publication in Petroleum Geoscience.
