"Engineering Geology is the science devoted to the investigation, study and solution of the engineering and environmental problems which may arise as the result of the interaction between geology and the works and activities of [humans] as well as to the prediction and of the development of measures for prevention or remediation of geological hazards" – IAEG Statutes, 1992.

The 'Fookes Meeting for Engineering Geology' (FMEG) will be held every two years by the Geological Society, by virtue of a generous donation from Mrs Edna Fookes in memory of Peter Fookes, FGS.

Each FMG will be developed with a thematic focus aligned to our Geohazards, Geoengineering & Georesilience Science Theme, in collaboration with the wider community via our Engineering Group (EGGS) and supported by Geological Society staff.

The meeting programme has been designed to appeal to undergraduate and postgraduate students, academic researchers and those working in applied practice, with the aim to foster stronger networks and new collaborations between the Engineering Geology community and allied professions and sectors, with a particular focus on supporting early-career members of this community.

Thanks to the generous donation in Peter Fookes' name, the meeting will be free to attend for all GSL Fellows and Student Fellows (with a delegate fee for non-Fellows). The two-day hybrid event will be held in person but will also be available remotely to involve an international audience as well as those who can't get to London in person.

Event details

The inaugural meeting will combine two keynote speakers, panel discussions with invited guests, networking sessions with industry professionals, poster presentations, and a student competition alongside the main scientific programme that we anticipate will have speakers from across applied practice, academia, and government.

Abstracts

Abstracts are currently being accepted for the inaugural Fookes Meeting for Engineering Geology (FMEG) for both oral and poster presentation.

Abstracts will be assessed based on the content of the abstract with names/affiliations removed and selected by the FMEG working group.

Students (both current undergraduate and postgraduate) are welcome to submit abstracts for inclusion in the main programme, and/or as part of the student competition within the FMEG programme (details below).

We welcome abstracts from individuals in applied practice, research or education in any of these related disciplines: Engineering Geology, Engineering Geomorphology, those with a background in physical Geography, Archaeology.

Contributions under these broad themes will be welcome, please indicate on the form which theme best suits your abstract.
  • Climate Adaptation
  • Digital Geoscience
  • Energy Transition
  • Ground Modelling
  • Geohazards
  • Other

The call for abstracts is now open. You can submit your abstract here.

The call for abstracts will close 10 March 2025.

Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology

The Quarterly Journal of Engineering Geology and Hydrogeology (QJEGH) is collaborating with the Engineering Group of the Geological Society on the 'Fookes Meeting for Engineering Geology' and wishes to extend an invite to presenters at the conference to submit a written-up version of their talk to the journal.

QJEGH welcomes a range of article types, such as case studies and technical notes. Depending on the level of interest, the opportunity to contribute to a dedicated thematic collection on the meeting topic will be available. For more info please contact the QJEGH editorial team, or visit the Geological Society stand at the event itself.
