Among the many organisations and committees with which
Sospeter Muhongo has been, or is, involved, he was the first and founding Regional Director of the International Council for Science Regional Office for Africa. He is also chair of the Science Programme Committee of the UN-proclaimed International Year of Planet Earth. He has co-organised over 100 international scientific and policy conferences, including those of UNESCO and ICSU in Africa, Asia and Europe. He was the first recipient of the Robert Shackleton Award for Outstanding Research on the Precambrian Geology of Africa from the Geological Society of Africa, in 2006 he was presented with the National Award for Outstanding Research in Science and Technology in Tanzania and in 2007 the Geological Society of South Africa conferred upon him its prestigious “Honours Award”. Sospeter Muhungo is a Fellow of many other societies and is a Fellow and Chartered Geologist of the Geological Society of London. His main fields of interest are the mining industry, environmental issues and policy matters.
