Speaker

Dr Richard Porter

Richard has had a long-standing fascination with the work of I K Brunel and had collected quotes about and by the great engineer since he was in his 20s. Brunel's major contributions to civil and geo-engineering will of course be familiar to most, especially with the geological problems that he faced on the Thames Tunnel and the Avon Gorge, but it was probably his appointment as Engineer to the Great Western Railway which gave him the widest opportunities to study the geology through which the Railway would run.

Richard's own career began with a PhD of the palynology of the Oxfordian Lias of Brora in Sutherland, followed by teaching geology in schools, museum work in Sheffield and Manchester, then a variety of university lecturing roles including the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth.

His research interests are wide ranging, including oceanography, shallow water sedimentation, sea level changes, building stones and the history of geology.
